Negotiating Tips from a Country Lawyer
Very good tips from Patrick at Popehat. While he may have meant many of these tongue-in-cheek, or as a criticism of a specific person, the underlying truths remain the same. For example:
In general, never tell anyone that you are well-versed in the law, even if you are an attorney. But most especially, do not do this when you are not an attorney.
or
Assume that the party with whom you are negotiating is himself knowledgeable, or act as though you do.

The funny thing is, almost everything the guy said was true. He’s far smarter than I am, in everything except the field that matters, which is suing people over unpaid debts. And he wanted me to know it.
So he just made me angry. And because he’s so smart, he realized (after a bit of explanation) that a lawsuit would cost him more than a settlement for what was owed.
He could have gotten out far easier if he hadn’t angered me by reminding me, repeatedly, that he’s much smarter than I am.
